How to prepare for a CQC inspection

By Cura Compliance UK · Updated 3 July 2026

To prepare for a CQC inspection, work backwards from the evidence: know which quality statements apply to your service, gather current evidence for each, fix the gaps, and rehearse with a mock inspection. Inspection-readiness is not a last-minute push — it is keeping policies current, records tidy and staff confident so that any inspection finds business as usual.

Understand how the CQC assesses you

The single assessment framework keeps the five key questions — safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led — and assesses services against 34 quality statements. For each statement the CQC gathers evidence from several categories, including feedback from people using the service, feedback from staff, observations, and processes such as your policies, audits and records. Preparing well means being ready across all of those categories, not just having the right documents.

Step 1 — Map the quality statements to your service

Identify which quality statements apply to your regulated activity, then note where your evidence lives for each. This map is the backbone of your preparation and doubles as a self-assessment you can update over time.

Step 2 — Get your policies and records current

Out-of-date policies and thin records are among the most common findings. Confirm every policy is version-controlled, in date and acknowledged by staff, and that care records, MAR charts, supervision notes and audits tell a consistent story. See CQC policies and procedures for what a complete, mapped set looks like.

Step 3 — Prepare your people

Inspectors talk to staff and to people using the service. Staff should know where to find policies, understand safeguarding and whistleblowing routes, and be able to describe how they deliver person-centred care. Brief the team on what to expect so nerves do not read as uncertainty.

Step 4 — Run a mock inspection

A mock inspection — ideally by someone independent of day-to-day delivery — tests the chain from policy to practice under realistic conditions and surfaces gaps while you still have time to fix them. Treat the findings as a prioritised action plan, not a score.

Step 5 — Keep evidence in one place

When the call comes, you want your Statement of Purpose, policy set, audit schedule, training matrix and acknowledgement records to hand. A single controlled source for policies and acknowledgements removes the last-minute hunt for the current version.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice does the CQC give before an inspection?
It varies and some inspections are unannounced, so the safest approach is continuous readiness — keeping policies current, records tidy and staff briefed — rather than relying on advance notice to prepare.
What evidence does the CQC look at?
Under the single assessment framework the CQC gathers evidence across categories including feedback from people using the service, feedback from staff, observations, and processes such as policies, audits and records, assessed against the 34 quality statements.
What is a mock inspection?
A mock inspection is an independent pre-inspection audit that simulates a CQC visit to test whether your written procedures work in practice, identify gaps, and produce a prioritised action plan before the real inspection.
How do I know which quality statements apply to my service?
They depend on your regulated activity and service type. Map each applicable statement to where your evidence lives, and keep that map updated as a rolling self-assessment.
