You can buy children's home policies as a ready-made pack, adapt free templates, or write your own. A bought pack is the quickest route to an Ofsted registration visit, provided it follows the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the Quality Standards and carries your home's details. What Ofsted will read
The Regulations name some policies outright. A home must have a child protection policy, a procedure for when a child goes missing, and a behaviour management policy, and it must follow them. The rest of the set comes from the Quality Standards and your Statement of Purpose: if the Statement says you support children with complex health needs, Ofsted expects the health and medication policies to say how.
At a registration visit the inspector usually reads the safeguarding, missing and behaviour policies closely and asks the proposed registered manager to explain them. A policy the manager cannot talk through is a weak policy, however well written.

Most new providers buy, then adapt. The adaptation matters: Ofsted wants to see your home in the policies (your location, your staffing model, your local safeguarding partners) and not a generic document with the name changed.
What to check before you buy
- Is it written for children's homes under the 2015 Regulations, or relabelled from adult care or fostering?
- Are the policies grouped by the nine Quality Standards, so you can see coverage at a glance?
- Does the safeguarding policy follow the current Working Together to Safeguard Children?
- Does each document carry a version, a review date and an owner?
- Are your home's name, registered manager and address filled in, or is that a find-and-replace job for you?
- Are updates included when guidance changes, and can you show which staff have read which version?
